STRAIGHT-STRUNG OR OVERSTUNG PIANO
In a straight-strung piano, the strings run parallel throughout. An overstrung piano has the bass strings running across over the treble ( Steel wire ) strings. Over-stringing is preferable,as the string-length produces a much better sound.
A taller upright piano or longer grand piano produces bigger volume.
Its all in the string-length.
PIANO TUNING
Your piano should be tuned at least twice a year. If the piano is in constant use as a concert or recording instrument it will naturally require more frequent tuning. Not having the piano tuned for years is a false
economy as it is difficult to return a neglected piano to good condition. Neglected pianos then need to have
a pitch raise over all 200 strings which puts a lot of strain on the piano’s structure. It is impossible to make such a big jump in pitch and have a stable tuning. So what has to be done is first raise all the strings to their proper average tension before the piano can be tuned. Your precious piano will sound its best when tuned and maintained regularly.
VOICING ( TONING )
Voicing is the process by which the piano-tuner tones the piano-hammers . People are quite surprised to know how the tuner has control over the piano sound. Each instrument has a certain amount of potential and the job is to find the optimum sound . By manipulating the hammers the piano-tuner is able to produce an even and pleasing sound to suit you and the surrounding environment . This is an art just like a piano tuning or piano action regulation .
Get a qualified piano tuner to tune your piano , and for piano action ( mechanism ) regulating, you need a special qualified Technician / Builder

PIANO MOVING AND TUNING Contact Carriers
The moving alone can affect the piano tuning . Actually when the piano arrives at its new home , it will pretty much in the same tune as it was , when it left the store / home . What will affect the piano is the new environment . If you have any concern that this might be relevant , sound advice might be to put the piano on a inside wall away from draft and direct sunlight etc . Allow it to “ acclimatize “ for at least two weeks,it will stabilize and hold a tuning much better.
REGULATING MECHANISM ( PIANO ACTION )
Piano action regulation is the art of adjusting moving parts , to a
specifications that make the piano
mechanism optimal and efficient to play.A piano action has close to 12,000 parts they are made of wood, felt, leather and metal etc. Wear and tear are constantly on all components.Periodically you need to adjust (regulate) the piano action (mechanism) into an optimal working order.
Professional piano player’s:
Teachers,pianists,composers and students,howplay Blues,Classical,Jazz,
Classical crossover,Baroque,Contemporary
and Impressionist music etc., they may preform with different finger techniques.
Therefore the mechanism must be adjusted to their requirements. Most new pianos are “ factory regulated “ to the manufacturers specification. These adjustments change with individual ways of playing , in a short time. Regulating is therefore necessary. It is possible to tailor the action to personal requirements.
The regulation should be done by a special qualified piano Technician/Builder. Contact me

WHAT CAUSES MY PIANO TO GO OUT OF TUNE ?
We have all experienced the high-humidity,which can cause our doors to stick and during dry times the sticking door mysteriously shrinks and opens very easily. In the same way the soundboard ( the speaker of your piano) swells, increasing its crown and stretching the piano strings to a higher pitch.During drytimes the tension will be lessened causing the pitch to drop.
Soundboard the speaker off your piano
SOUND-BOARD CRACKS & BRIDGES.
(Just like previous text “refer to the above”)
Excessive temperature like:
fireplaces, gas heaters, direct sunlight or heating vents blowing onto the piano can crack and split a soundboard (see photos ) as well as delaminate bridges
(see photos ) etc.
Additional damage: crack in pin block
( see photos ), unstable tuning (loos tuning pins) and loos action (mechanism) parts etc.
Excessive Humidity:
✦ Rusty strings and pins. ( see photos )
✦ Causing the pitch to go higher.
✦ Sticking keys and Hammers.
( see Photos )
✦ Sluggish action/mechanism etc.
CRACKED IRON FRAME.
Recommendation of dumping a piano , is the most difficult decision for a piano technician / builder has to make. Some cracks are non-repairable while others in a different section of the frame can be repaired. They are some cracks that do not pose a problem under tension at all. ( see Photos )
